college football pick
The Oakland Raiders prepare for the 2010 season from a unique position. Under Al Davis' leadership, they often do. The unique aspect for the Raiders in 2010 is the quarterback situation. Remarkably, Oakland currently has six, count 'em, six quarterbacks on its roster each of whom have started at least 16 NFL games. And more remarkably, five of those quarterbacks started no fewer than three NFL contests last season, with three of them doing so for the Raiders. The sixth quarterback led his UFL team to a championship last year before returning to the NFL by signing with the Raiders shortly before the end of the season. The quality of the quarterback talent on the Raider's roster may be slim, but there is no lack of experience.
Based on past performance alone, Oakland should have little difficulty parsing out the wheat from the chaff. Jason Campbell, obtained from the Washington Redskins during the 2010 NFL Draft, should be handed the position outright. Whether he will or not, only Coach Tom Cable, or perhaps Al Davis, knows for sure. A glance at the statistics shows that Campbell has the most on the field experience, the highest quarterback rating and is the only quarterback among the five with more touchdown passes than interceptions. Campbell is accurate, tough, avoids stupid decisions and avoids being sacked better than any of the others. The knock on him is that he is a slow decision maker who plays too conservatively.
The real decisions for the Raiders should be who else to keep on the roster with Campbell. A case, albeit a very mild one, could be made for each of the others. Perhaps the least likely to stick would be Charlie Frye. Frye has already been found wanting in Cleveland and Seattle and he hasn't done particularly well when given the opportunity to play in Oakland. Frye does have a respectable career completion percentage, the best in this group, but his touchdown/interception ratio and his sack percentage are the worst of the five. His win-loss percentage is only better than JaMarcus Russell's. Frye is a dink and dunk quarterback who has the ability to scramble but never seems to make the most of it. While in Cleveland, which was admittedly a horrible situation for any quarterback, Frye was often known to have spun away from a perceived rush by turning directly into an oncoming blitzer, whence he'd get clobbered.
Base upon maturity and desire, former number one draft pick JaMarcus Russell should have been long gone by now. But based upon physical talent alone, Russell should be the best of the group. He is a mountain of a quarterback with a cannon arm. That is why he was the first draft pick in 2007. The Raiders must decide whether to fish or cut bait. Russell has the talent. Does he have the desire? If the Raiders believe his career can be resurrected, they may hang on to him, since no other team seems to be expressing any interest in Russell at the moment. If Russell can be developed for the future, he may have some value. Otherwise the Raiders should let him go, which could happen very soon.
Oakland's hardest decision may really be deciding between Bruce Gradkowski and Kyle Boller. Pretend for a moment that Campbell is the hands-down selection to start and that the Raiders decide to give Russell the opportunity to turn his career around with the team. Then who will the Raiders want to be their backup or third string quarterback. Boller and Gradkowski are not that much different if you look at the stats alone, but it appears that Boller is a bit better. The only thing is, Gradkowski was passable for the Raiders last season and his play helped turn their fortunes around somewhat. Boller has the better career won-loss record as a starter, but much of that was due to his playing for a strong Ravens' team where he was the weak link. Boller has a higher career completion percentage, but both he and Gradkowski are below NFL standards in that regard. Boller can get the ball downfield a little better too, as evidenced by their average yards per attempt, 5.9 to 5.4, respectively. But both of those averages are again below NFL norms. Both Boller and Gradkowski throw slighly more interceptions than touchdowns. Both are sacked the same percent of times. Boller's career quarterback rating is slightly higher and at 6-3, 220, he fits the stereotypical size for an NFL quarterback better than Gradkowski who weighs about the same but is only 6-1. Thing is, Boller doesn't instill confidence. Gradkowski doesn't really either, but he does seem to be a grittier fighter, which keeps him in the running. And I've overlooked former Buffalo Bill starter J.P. Losman, who won a championship in the UFL last season before joining the Raiders at year end. Look at Losman's career statistics, which in many respects appear better than all the other's except Campbell. Losman completes a fair percentage of his passes, for as many yards per attempt as Campbell, throws nearly as many touchdowns as interceptions, but does have a hard time making decisions which results in an inordinate number of sacks. He was shell-shocked in Buffalo, but as a former number one draft pick, he may be worth the risk of keeping.
It will be fun to see how this plays out. Decision time is coming up in Oakland. Wonder who will actually be calling the shots on this one.
